Mathematics
We will continue our Math work this year by exploring the units of Applying The Operations To Area & Perimeter and Understanding Fractions. Students will continue applying their skills of multiplication and addition to solve word problems, specifically to find the area and perimeter of a given space with dimensions. Students will then explore identifying fractions, labeling fractions, and comparing fractions. Students will continue to practice previously taught skills through a weekly spiral review, which will be corrected in class and sent home the following week for parents to review at home. Any uncompleted reviews can be returned the next week.
Many parents have asked about ways they can support their child at home in Math. Below are the Unit Overviews for Parents covered throughout the year. These files include the standards, Math language/vocabulary, unit overview, skills and strategies, video support, and questions to ask your child. Each document includes links to other resources, so it is best to view on the computer rather than printing it out. I will be sure to post the titles of the units as we cover them in class.

Literacy
Third Graders have launched a new curriculum this year, following the EL (formerly known as Expeditionary Learning). You can read more about their curriculum and educational approaches here.
What can we learn from reading literary classics? In this quarter, students will consider the answer to this question through a case study of Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. At the beginning of the module, students will read an informational text about the author and historical context. As students read chapter of Peter Pan, they will consider how each new chapter builds on the events in previous chapters, and make connections between what they have read in Peter Pan and the issues presented in the informational text. They will analyze character traits and actions, and compare their point of view to the point of view of the characters. Once students have finished reading Peter Pan, they will write a book review explaining whether or not they would recommend the story to a friend, and participate in a discussion about their opinions of the book. Students will finish the module by revising a scene from Peter Pan and creating a presentation explaining why and how they have revised that scene.

Sciences
In Third Grade, we rotate for Science/Social Studies lessons. Our class will be with Ms. Walker for Quarter 3, focusing on the the Life Cycle of a Plant and Financial Literacy. Please visit her class website for more details.
My Sciences units include:
Science: Objects in the Sky
Students will explore the relationship between the sun, moon, and Earth. This includes the effects of rotation and revolution of the Earth, as well as the moon phases.
Social Studies: Geography
Students will explore the five themes of geography: movement, location, region, human-environment interaction, place. Students will compile this new knowledge in a culminating Treasure Map project.
